Ministry's Call to Surrender Weapons Reveals Concerns About Potential Armed Resistance Against Damascus Control
The interior minister in the government formed by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham leader Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, named Mohammed Abdel Rahman, announced the elimination of a prominent former Assad regime official accused of multiple crimes, through a targeted operation in Damascus' Al-Qadam neighborhood.
The minister explained the operation occurred during a confrontation, with the target's vehicle exploding due to contained explosives. He called on former regime elements and civilians who found weapons from the regime's remnants to immediately surrender them to Jolani's authorities.
He specified a deadline for surrendering weapons, warning of strict punitive measures against weapon holders who exceed the timeline.
Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham's settlement centers for former regime military, police, and security personnel in Damascus have seen significant turnout since operations began last Saturday.
The organization has expanded its settlement centers across Aleppo, Hama, Homs, Tartus, and Deir ez-Zor governorates to process former regime personnel.
